Re: Rouge Wizard

Alas, the breast pockets we have are side-opening, with velcro (or in government-speak, "Hook and loop fastener material"*) closures set at about 15 degrees from vertical. There is nowhere for the little yellow handle to protrude, and if it did, it would draw criticism from officials who h...

Re: Starship Troupers

First book of yours that I read was Warlock In Spite Of himself. I bought all of that series I could find at the used book store, and saw your name on Her Majesty's wizard, so I bought that, too. You were still writing those series, so the newer ones were only available at the new book store - As a ...

Re: Available as eBook?

Hmm. Thing about unauthorized copies: They generally suck. This one is missing several paragraphs of text at the end of Ch 15. (not to mention the numerous spelling (or rather, contextual) errors and all the wonky punctuation.) But as I work on it, I have to read the story... twice! So for all the p...

Re: Available as eBook?

A quick update: I'm working on turning "Her Majesty's Wizard" into an e-book. I'm working from a bootleg copy, and the formatting is horrible, but I am cleaning it up (up to Ch. 7, now,) and it is coming along nicely. I'm not making any changes to the text, except that It looks like it was...

Re: How much would you pay for a Stasheff ebook?

Nope, sorry. Army junior enlisted :) I do read a lot, though, and at 37, am somewhat older than most of the guys in my unit, including all but one of the senior enlisted. (P.S. I did some poking around and experimenting, and have actually found a GNU ebook producing program. I'll play with it and if...

Re: Available as eBook?

neath: An author, even one with as well known and respected a name as Mr. Stasheff, can't just "give them a call" and expect them to jump. Even if he retains the rights to his work, publishers aren't very likely to jump at a chance to reprint old works unless they have shown strong sales f...

Re: E-Commerce and making it happen!

I've mentioned baen.com and the demonstrated results from offering free copies as a promotional item, and I've mentioned bootleg copies/hassle factor. I should probably mention where I read about all of that stuff. The reading is a bit long, but here are the links: http://www.baen.com/library/palave...

Re: How much would you pay for a Stasheff audiobook?

I suppose it would depend on the reader. I'd pay much more to hear anything narrated by James Earl Jones than, for example, William Shatner. You'd actually have to pay me to sit through Fran Drescher reading anything. $7 - $10 is not bad for a download of a 300 - 400 page book read by a reas...

Re: How much would you pay for a Stasheff ebook?

I don't have any figures handy, but I've heard that an author usually gets a bit less than 10% of the retail price per copy sold, for older titles. Thus, if the author is offering an e-book on his website, I would have to argue that the price should be pegged so that he makes about 25% of the usual ...

Re: Around the Watercooler...

Until I was 16, I was not much of a reader. Then I got a job babysitting four kids for a man with an extensive Sci-Fi library... and the rest is history. Among the books on his shelves were a couple of the warlock books. It wasn't long before the entire collection was on my own shelf, along with the...
