Went in Tuesday and had a herniated disc removed. I now have titanium standing in for part of my spine.
It doesn't hurt nearly as bad as you might expect; in fact, it's not even difficult going up and down stairs. Slow, but not hard. Downside is that I don't have any morphine-induced haze to use as an excuse for being non-productive.
Any rate, I'm back home catching up on all sorts of things that I've let go for far too long. I'd work on the outstanding books, but I don't really want to duplicate ElderGeek's efforts. Maybe I can proof his editing? I'd enjoy that, I think. I can't really do artwork, because I can't sit for too long or in the kind of postures I usually need to draw. (hunching over is really painful, and that's generally how I have to sit to draw)
So that's the poop from Hawaii. Good day to all!

Re: Back surgery
Too bad it's not adamantium. Then you'd be an X-Man.
I'd suggest trying to write in your free time, original stories and essays, but would that require hunching over painfully as well?
Wishing you a quick recovery,
Ed & Chris

Re: Back surgery
Typing requires sitting up straight, which is good, but I can only do it for so long before I have to lean back or lie down.
In fact, I can't do any one thing for too long before having to change to some other position. Between answering email and writing two replies on this forum, I'm about at my limit. It's time for some pain killers (Bushmill's is my preferred...) and maybe a walk to the mailbox.
Adamantium is not covered under the army's insurance.
I may not be an X-man, but does this at least make me a Titan?

Re: Back surgery

Re: Back surgery
Sorry to hear you had to have the procedure, but VERY glad it went well. Can you dictate into a recorder, and type it up pater? Or will you have to fill your time watching soap operas?
All best,
Christopher

Re: Back surgery
It went very well indeed.
Almost 4 months after the surgery, I'm in no pain at all.
Mostly I fill my time hunting and redeeming recyclables (lucrative!) and fixing and using electronics. Lots of demand for that lately.
When I'm not doing that, I'm at the airport, either flying or working on aircraft. Have to get proficient at it, so when I leave the army, I can jump right in to a good job. Mortgage companies like to be paid...

Re: Back surgery
Back, finally.
Had a bit of an incedent the other day... The power supply that was providing sustinence to both of my Windiws laptops surged and took out the motherboards.
So, I'm on a Linux box, and trying to rebuild my bookmarks, password database, and all that other stuff that's so easy when your backups are compatible.
Hopefully the new moherboards will get here next week, and hopefully the hard drives were protected.
