Ugh.

What with totaling my car, settling insurance, buying a new (used) one, and fixing all the little things wrong with it, getting the paperwork done, and fixing the wife's car, all on top of my regular job, there has been no time to work on any kind of cover art.

Hopefully this week things will settle down a bit.

No worries. We've been slowly building contacts with artists. I'll contact Anne Brant, who did the cover for Her Majesty's Wizard and see if she has time to do this cover. If not, we've got two or three other people who might be interested. Thanks!

Great gratitude to you, wondrous keyboarder! I will be delighted and forever grateful for you having translated one more Merovence book. I heartily endorse Ortho's comments and will delighted to go through the first edition to check for any OCR flaws. What a kick that's going to be -- proofreading my own book! At least I won't have to argue with the proofreader this time.

With thanks,Christopher Stasheff

Yet more delays. Now dealing with insurance - again! - after another car got totaled. (In-laws were driving; They're in Michigan, I'm in Hawaii. Not their fault, but still a bit of a headache.)
And the army has us all going off on an exercise for a couple weeks. Preparing for that has been a huge time sink, and isn't going to get better in the near future.

So that's what's been holding up progress lately.

If you have notes on the process and maybe a recommendation on Mac software, I may be able to help prep a book or two. I grew up reading these books and am rapidly approaching wearing out my second set.

Hello, again.
I'm back, after spending nearly two weeks getting sunburned in the wilds of Hawaii (at 6,000 feet, it looks like a desert, I kid you not!)

I told a friend about needing a book cover, and he started toying with some ideas. Below is his first sketch of Fadecourt from Oathbound Wizard:

He's going to try for a full-sized cover, pretty soon. He's pretty busy at work, so I don't expect it any time soon, but when he gets going, he does good work.

He did an impression of Sir Guy that I really liked, but I didn't manage to get a picture of it. Sorry :(

Thqnk you so much for your hard work and encouragement, kf6eml. I'll second Ortho's opinhion -- you're a godsend. I can proofread the files and free up some of his time. I don't know how you do it -- or him either!

Encouragement I've got by the bucketful.
Lately, though, it's hard to get things done. Everyone is busy getting moved to Afghanistan, and the guy who was going to draw a cover has no time for outside interests.
I've hurt my back, and although the docs have decided that surgery is not in order, I will still be out for at least six weeks, so hopefully I'll have time to work on it myself - Since I'm not allowed to do any physical work, they'll probably put me on desk duty.
Add up back problems and the accompanying appointments and doctor visits, a computer system failure requiring a complete reinstall of Windows, helping our unit's move go smoothly, and family coming to visit in a couple weeks, I'm lucky to get anything done at all. Now and then I try to plug away at editing, but it's still slow going, and as much fun as it can be, the cold hard fact is that work has to come before hobbies. (I'm not trying to get paid for this, just explaining why it's taking so long.)

I will admit to some selfish motives, here. I want to read your new stories; any time I can free up for you gives you more time to finish writing them.
There's the usual admiration and respect thing, too, I suppose. As an amateur wordsmith myself, I must admire the imagination and respect the discipline of anyone who can conceive, complete, and publish all of those books. I know the hard work that goes into it, and haven't ever managed to do it myself. It doesn't hurt that the stories are good ones.
Another benefit I get out of if is practice with proofreading, editing, patching bad copy (sometimes the text may be missing words or sentences, have repeated paragraphs or pages, et cetera) and compiling and producing the finished book. It's an education - and almost worth the price of enduring all the puns.
