Sort of. It's from an anthology that attempted to tell a more-or-less coherent novel with sections written by different authors. I worried that it might stick out as such, especially since it was think on exposition. Looks like my suspicions were right...

Well, it just drops the reader into what seems to be an ongoing war, and no indication that the war is drawing to a close.
It's a good piece by itself, and everything necessary to understand the story is present, but it is obvious that it is part of a larger story.
Sort of reminds me of "The Red Badge of Courage" in that it presents the stories of individuals who are engaged in a larger story, which is not described in great detail.
